The H7 VLP vaccine is a recombinant, plant- or cell-derived virus-like particle (VLP) influenza vaccine candidate designed to protect against avian influenza A (H7N9) virus. The primary antigenic component is the hemagglutinin (HA) protein from the H7N9 strain, which is expressed and assembled into non-infectious particles that mimic the structure of the native virus but lack viral genetic material. This approach elicits strong humoral and cellular immune responses by presenting HA in its native conformation to the immune system. The mechanism of action involves induction of neutralizing antibodies targeting the HA glycoprotein on influenza viruses, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells. The technology allows for rapid production and scalability compared to traditional egg-based vaccines and can be adapted quickly for emerging strains[1][2][3][6].
