Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**H7N9 + Matrix-M** is a vaccine candidate against avian influenza A(H7N9) consisting of H7N9 virus-like particles (VLPs) adjuvanted with Matrix-M, a saponin-based adjuvant derived from Quillaja saponaria Molina tree fractions combined with cholesterol and phospholipids forming 40-nm nanoparticles. Matrix-M enhances immunogenicity by promoting rapid recruitment and activation of antigen-presenting cells, inducing Th1-biased CD4+ T-cell responses, cross-presentation, and potent humoral immunity with dose-sparing effects, outperforming unadjuvanted formulations in phase 1/2 trials where it demonstrated superior antibody responses and tolerability. Developed by Novavax, it targets prevention of H7N9 infection, a novel avian influenza strain with pandemic potential.
