The H7N9 avian influenza virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine is a plant-derived vaccine candidate developed by Medicago Inc. (a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma) for the prevention of H7N9 avian influenza. Produced using the proprietary Proficia platform, the vaccine utilizes *Nicotiana benthamiana* plants as bioreactors to express recombinant hemagglutinin (HA) proteins from the H7N9 virus strain A/Hangzhou/1/2013. These HA proteins self-assemble into non-infectious VLPs that mimic the native structure of the virus but lack genetic material, rendering them unable to replicate. To enhance immunogenicity, the vaccine was frequently formulated with GLA (glucopyranosyl lipid A), a synthetic Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist adjuvant. Although the vaccine demonstrated the ability to induce robust antibody responses in clinical trials, the development program was terminated in 2023 following the closure of Medicago's operations by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma.
