Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The **H7N9 Avian Influenza VLP Vaccine** is a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine designed to protect against avian influenza A (H7N9) virus, a highly pathogenic strain posing pandemic risk. VLPs mimic the virus structure with hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), and matrix 1 (M1) proteins but lack genetic material, enabling non-infectious immunogenicity via native antigen presentation that induces hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) antibodies, cross-reactive responses, and T-cell immunity. Developed using insect cell systems like Sf9, it has shown protection in preclinical models (mice, ferrets, chickens) against homologous and heterologous H7N9 challenges, with superior efficacy when adjuvanted (e.g., ISCOMATRIX, Matrix-M1). Novavax advanced it to Phase I trials (NCT01897701, NCT02078674), demonstrating safety and immunogenicity, especially with adjuvant boosting seroconversion to 80.6% at low doses. Vaxxas' HD-MAP patch-delivered version (VXS-1219) completed Phase I enrollment in 2024 with BARDA funding for pandemic preparedness.
