H7N9 live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) is a type of vaccine designed to protect against avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, which has caused severe human infections and has pandemic potential. LAIVs are administered intranasally and mimic natural infection, eliciting both humoral and cellular immune responses. They are typically developed by using reverse genetics to combine the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes from the H7N9 virus with the internal genes of an attenuated master donor virus, often a cold-adapted strain. This attenuation limits replication to the cooler temperatures of the upper airways, preventing disease while still stimulating immunity. The development of H7N9 vaccines, including LAIVs, has been a priority due to the virus's potential to evolve into a pandemic strain and the lack of pre-existing immunity in humans. Various institutes and companies have been involved in developing H7N9 vaccine candidates.
