Overview

The **H7N9 Pandemic Influenza VLP Vaccine** is a recombinant virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine developed primarily by Novavax to protect against avian influenza A(H7N9), a highly pathogenic strain that emerged in China in 2013 with pandemic potential. VLPs mimic the structure of influenza virions by incorporating hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), and matrix 1 (M1) proteins produced in insect cell systems (e.g., Sf9 cells), but lack viral genetic material, rendering them non-infectious yet highly immunogenic due to native antigen conformation and self-adjuvant properties. It elicits robust hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) and neutralizing antibody responses, providing homologous and heterologous protection in preclinical models (mice, ferrets, chickens), with enhanced Th1-biased immunity when adjuvanted (e.g., Matrix-M1). Novavax advanced it to Phase I/II trials, receiving FDA Fast Track designation, though no full approval for routine use has been achieved.[2][3][8][9][10]
