Overview

The H7N9 pandemic live attenuated influenza vaccine (H7N9 pLAIV) is an experimental vaccine candidate designed to prevent respiratory disease caused by the H7N9 avian influenza virus. It is a 6:2 reassortant virus developed using the cold-adapted (ca), temperature-sensitive, and attenuated A/Ann Arbor/6/60 master donor virus backbone. This backbone carries the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) surface glycoproteins from the A/Anhui/1/2013 (H7N9) strain. Administered intranasally, the vaccine is intended to mimic natural infection and stimulate a broad immune response, including mucosal IgA and systemic T-cell and B-cell responses, without causing clinical disease. The development of this candidate has been led by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to prepare for potential pandemic outbreaks of H7N9 influenza.
