The H9N2 whole virus vaccine is an inactivated (killed) viral vaccine developed to prevent infection with the avian influenza A subtype H9N2. It is primarily used for immunization of poultry such as chickens and ducks to reduce clinical symptoms and block viral shedding after exposure to both homologous and heterologous strains of the virus[2][3][4][8]. The active component consists of formaldehyde-inactivated Avian Influenza Virus type A, subtype H9N2 (e.g., strain A/CK/UAE/415/99), often formulated as a water-in-oil emulsion with adjuvants like liquid paraffin[8]. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the host immune system to produce protective antibodies against the hemagglutinin antigen on the surface of the influenza virion. This leads to reduced transmission and severity of disease upon subsequent exposure[5]. The primary indication is prevention of avian influenza caused by subtype H9N2 in poultry populations; it has also been studied for safety and immunogenicity in humans but is not approved for human use[5].
