HA-HDAPPs are a class of theranostic semiconducting photothermal polymer nanoparticles designed for the detection and treatment of disseminated colorectal cancer (CRC). These particles consist of hybrid donor-acceptor polymer particles (HDAPPs) that have been functionalized with hyaluronic acid (HA). The HA moiety serves as a targeting ligand for the cancer stem cell marker CD44, which is frequently overexpressed in colorectal cancer cells. HA-HDAPPs utilize the semiconducting properties of the polymer core to provide fluorescent signals for intraoperative tumor detection and to generate localized thermal energy upon laser stimulation for photothermal ablation. Preclinical studies in murine models have demonstrated that intraperitoneal administration of HA-HDAPPs leads to improved binding specificity and a significant reduction in tumor burden compared to non-functionalized nanoparticles.
