The HAC1 vaccine is a plant-produced recombinant subunit influenza vaccine developed to protect against the 2009 pandemic H1N1 (A/California/04/2009) virus. It consists of a recombinant hemagglutinin (HA) monomer containing a poly-histidine purification tag and an endoplasmic reticulum retention signal at the C-terminus. The HA antigen is expressed in *Nicotiana benthamiana* plants and purified for use as an injectable aqueous formulation. The HAC1 vaccine has demonstrated safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults, eliciting strong antibody responses measured by hemagglutination-inhibition and microneutralization assays. It is notable as one of the first plant-based subunit vaccines to reach clinical evaluation, supporting further development of this technology for rapid pandemic response[1][2][5].
