Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hachimijiogan is a traditional Japanese Kampo (herbal) medicine composed of eight specific botanical ingredients: Rehmanniae Radix, Corni Fructus, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Alismatis Rhizoma, Poria, Moutan Cortex, Cinnamomi Cortex, and Aconiti Radix Processata. Regulated as a pharmaceutical product in Japan, it is primarily indicated for age-related conditions including urinary frequency, nocturia, lower back pain, and blurred vision. Research indicates that Hachimijiogan exhibits nephroprotective effects by inducing the expression of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1α (HIF-1α) and its downstream target genes, such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Glucose Transporter 1 (GLUT1), thereby alleviating renal hypoxia and oxidative stress. It is often utilized in the management of chronic kidney disease and diabetic nephropathy due to its ability to reduce proteinuria and markers of oxidative damage.
