Overview

Haemagglutinin-strain B (Yamagata-like) refers to the recombinant or purified form of the hemagglutinin (HA) surface glycoprotein derived from the Influenza B virus of the Yamagata lineage. Hemagglutinin is a key antigenic protein on the viral envelope responsible for binding to host cell receptors and facilitating viral entry. The HA protein is a primary target for neutralizing antibodies and forms a critical component in seasonal influenza vaccines. The World Health Organization has recommended inclusion of this strain's HA in quadrivalent flu vaccines for many years; however, due to apparent extinction of circulating wild-type Influenza B/Yamagata viruses since 2020, regulatory agencies are now recommending its removal from future vaccine formulations[2][5][7]. The mechanism of action is immunization—eliciting an immune response that produces protective antibodies against Influenza B/Yamagata-lineage viruses[4][6]. This antigen is produced recombinantly in mammalian cells such as HEK293 and used as part of inactivated or subunit vaccine formulations[2].
