Overview

Haemophilus b conjugate vaccine is an active immunizing agent used to prevent infection caused by *Haemophilus influenzae* type b (Hib) bacteria. The vaccine works by inducing the body to produce protective antibodies against Hib. It is a conjugate vaccine in which the polysaccharide antigen from the bacterial capsule is chemically linked (conjugated) to a carrier protein such as tetanus toxoid or diphtheria protein, enhancing immune response especially in infants and young children. The primary indication is prevention of invasive diseases caused by Hib—including meningitis, epiglottitis, pneumonia, septic arthritis, and pericarditis—in children aged 2 months through 5 years. The introduction of this vaccine has led to a dramatic reduction (>90%) in severe Hib infections where routinely used[1][2][4]. It does not protect against other types of *Haemophilus influenzae* or other bacteria. Developers: Sanofi Pasteur, Merck, GlaxoSmithKline
