Overview

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine is a biologic product designed to prevent invasive diseases caused by the Hib bacterium, such as meningitis, pneumonia, and epiglottitis. The vaccine utilizes a conjugation technology where the capsular polysaccharide of the bacterium, polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP), is chemically linked to a carrier protein (e.g., tetanus toxoid or CRM197). This conjugation is critical because it transforms the polysaccharide from a T-cell independent antigen into a T-cell dependent one, allowing for an effective immune response and the induction of immunological memory in infants and young children. Several manufacturers, including CanSino Biologics, Luoyi (Wuxi) Biopharmaceutical, and the Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products, are developing or producing various formulations (including lyophilized and freeze-dried versions) to address the global burden of Hib-related infections.
