Hair follicle-derived mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent adult stem cells isolated from the mesenchymal compartment (dermal papilla or dermal sheath) of human hair follicles[1][3][7]. They possess the ability to self-renew and differentiate into various cell lineages such as adipocytes, chondrocytes, osteocytes, myogenic, melanocytic, and neuronal cells[1][3][7]. Mechanistically, they promote tissue repair and regeneration via paracrine effects—secreting exosomes and cytokines, upregulating ECM components (collagen I/III), immunomodulation, and angiogenesis[3][5][7]. Their applications reported include regenerative medicine, treatment of androgenic alopecia (AGA)[2][4], wound healing, tendinopathy[3], photoaging of the skin[5], and possibly osteoporosis[7]. Typical protocols include isolation from healthy hair follicles (often occipital scalp), expansion in culture, and local or intravenous administration, often as an autologous cell suspension[1][2][4][7].
