haishengsu

Haishengsu (HSS) is a purified protein extract derived from the shellfish Tegillarca granosa. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for cancer treatment for over a century. Preclinical studies indicate that Haishengsu inhibits proliferation and induces differentiation of leukemia cells, particularly in drug-resistant cell lines such as K562/ADM and HL-60. The mechanism involves downregulation of multidrug resistance genes (mdr1), BCR/ABL, sorcin, inhibition of anti-apoptotic proteins like Bcl-2 and MPO, upregulation of pro-apoptotic Bax gene expression, increased caspase-3 activity, and reduction in p-glycoprotein levels. These effects result in enhanced apoptosis and reversal of drug resistance to agents like adriamycin. Haishengsu is currently under clinical investigation (Phase 1) for non-small cell lung cancer by Qingdao Haisheng Tumor Hospital Co., Ltd[1][6][8].
