Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Halobetasol propionate cream 0.05% is a super-high potency topical synthetic corticosteroid used for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, such as moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. Originally developed by Ciba-Geigy and later marketed under the brand name Ultravate by Westwood-Squibb (Bristol-Myers Squibb), it acts as an agonist of the glucocorticoid receptor. By binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, it modulates inflammatory pathways in the skin, inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins) to control the biosynthesis of potent inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Due to its high potency, treatment is typically limited to two consecutive weeks to minimize the risk of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression.
