Overview

Haloprogin is a halogenated phenolic ether and topical antifungal drug formerly used to treat superficial fungal infections of the skin, such as tinea corporis (ringworm), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea pedis (athlete’s foot). It was marketed in 1% creams under several brand names. The mechanism of action is not fully understood but is thought to involve inhibition of oxygen uptake and disruption of fungal cell membrane structure and function, leading to fungicidal activity. Haloprogin was associated with a relatively high incidence of local side effects including irritation, burning, blistering, scaling, and itching. Due to these adverse effects and the availability of newer antifungals with better safety profiles, it has been discontinued in many markets including the United States[1][2][4][7][8].
