Overview

Haloxylon scoparium extract is a plant-derived extract obtained from the aerial and root parts of the Haloxylon scoparium (syn. Hammada scoparia), a shrub in the Amaranthaceae family commonly found in arid and semi-arid regions of North Africa and Asia, particularly Morocco. The extract is rich in isoquinoline alkaloids (including N-methylsalsoline, isosalsoline, salsolidine, dehydrosalsolidine, N-methylisosalsoline, and carnegine), phenylethylamines, tryptolines, tryptamines, and flavonoids (e.g., rutin, isorhamnetin glycosides, quercetin glycosides). It has demonstrated a wide range of pharmacological effects in preclinical studies, including potent antioxidant, antimicrobial (notably against multidrug-resistant bacteria), antidiabetic (in vitro enzyme inhibition), cytotoxic/anticancer, renoprotective, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing activities. Its mechanism of action is primarily attributed to antioxidant/free radical scavenging and antibacterial properties mediated by polyphenols and alkaloids, as confirmed by studies using DPPH, FRAP, H₂O₂, and ABTS assays as well as microbial inhibition tests. It is widely used in traditional medicine to treat hypertension, diabetes, skin diseases, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, and as an antidote for snake and scorpion bites[1][2][3][4][5][7][9].
