Overview

Halquinol is a non-antibiotic antimicrobial mixture belonging to the quinoline family, specifically composed of 5,7-dichloro-8-quinolinol (approximately 60%), 5-chloro-8-quinolinol (approximately 30%), and 7-chloro-8-quinolinol (approximately 10%). It is primarily utilized in veterinary medicine as a feed additive for swine and poultry to promote growth and control enteric infections. Halquinol acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract and is not significantly absorbed into the systemic circulation. Its mechanism of action involves the chelation of essential metal ions required for microbial enzyme activity and a direct anti-peristaltic effect on the intestinal smooth muscle, which increases the transit time of digesta and improves nutrient absorption. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi and protozoa like *Entamoeba histolytica*.
