Overview

HANK (Highly Activated Natural Killer) cell therapy is an adoptive immunotherapy involving the ex vivo expansion and activation of natural killer (NK) cells. These cells are typically isolated from the peripheral blood of a patient (autologous) or a healthy donor (allogeneic). Through a standardized cultivation process, the NK cells are stimulated to reach a state of high cytotoxicity, characterized by increased expression of effector molecules like Perforin and Granzyme, and the Fc gamma receptor IIIa (CD16), which facilitates antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC). Investigated primarily in China, specifically by Tianjin Second People's Hospital, this therapy is being evaluated for its ability to restore immune function in AIDS patients with poor immune reconstitution and to target solid tumors such as lung cancer. It aims to enhance the body's innate immune response against virally infected or malignant cells.
