Overview

pWRG/HTN-M(co) is a DNA plasmid vaccine candidate developed by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) for the prevention of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) caused by Hantaan virus infection. The vaccine utilizes the pWRG plasmid vector to deliver a codon-optimized cDNA sequence encoding the M genome segment of the Hantaan virus, which expresses the Gn and Gc envelope glycoproteins. These proteins are the primary targets for neutralizing antibodies. The vaccine is typically administered using a needle-free jet injection device, such as the PharmaJet Stratis, which facilitates intracellular delivery of the plasmid. In clinical development, it is often evaluated as part of a bivalent vaccine strategy alongside a Puumala virus DNA vaccine to provide broader protection against the diverse hantaviruses that cause HFRS in endemic regions of Europe and Asia.
