Hantavax is an inactivated viral vaccine developed by GC Biopharma (formerly Green Cross) for the prevention of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). It was the first hantavirus vaccine to be commercially available, originally approved in South Korea in 1990. The vaccine is produced by inactivating Hantaan virus (HTNV), specifically the ROK 84-105 strain, which is grown in suckling mouse brains. It is formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. The vaccination protocol typically involves a primary series of two doses followed by a booster dose to maintain long-term protective neutralizing antibody levels, particularly in high-risk populations such as military personnel and farmers in endemic regions.
