Haploidentical stem cells refer to an investigational adoptive immunotherapy protocol developed at Weill Medical College of Cornell University for the treatment of high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). This cellular therapy involves the infusion of hematopoietic stem cells (specifically CD34+ cells) collected from a half-matched (haploidentical) related donor, such as a parent, child, or sibling. Administered following induction or salvage chemotherapy, these cells are intended to exert a graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect, where the donor's immune system recognizes and attacks residual malignant cells. The therapy also aims to accelerate hematopoietic recovery after intensive chemotherapy and serves as a bridge to a subsequent formal allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant.
