Overview

Hashish is a concentrated preparation of cannabis composed of compressed or purified preparations of stalked resin glands, called trichomes, from the flowers and leaves of the *Cannabis* plant. Its primary psychoactive constituent is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which acts as a partial agonist at the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are primarily located in the central nervous system and mediate the drug's psychoactive effects, while CB2 receptors are found mainly in the immune system. Hashish typically contains a higher concentration of THC than unextracted cannabis flower. It has been used historically for both recreational and medicinal purposes, including the management of chronic pain, nausea, and muscle spasticity, although it is not an FDA-approved pharmaceutical in this form.
