Hawaii Biotech's SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is a recombinant subunit vaccine candidate designed to prevent COVID-19. It utilizes the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) protein ectodomain, expressed using the company's proprietary Drosophila S2 insect cell platform. This expression system produces proteins that closely mimic the native viral structure. The vaccine is formulated with CoVaccine HT, a proprietary oil-in-water nanoemulsion adjuvant that is compatible with lyophilization, enabling the development of a thermostabilized product that does not require refrigeration for global distribution. Preclinical data in mice demonstrated that the vaccine elicits robust IgG responses, high neutralizing antibody titers against the prototype virus and variants of concern (including Beta and Gamma), and antigen-specific cellular immunity. The project received supplemental SBIR funding from the NIH in 2020.
