Overview

Hawthorn refers to the leaves, berries, flowers, and roots of plants in the Crataegus genus (including C. monogyna, C. oxyacantha, C. laevigata, C. pinnatifida, and C. mexicana) that are used medicinally. It contains flavonoids with antioxidant properties that appear to improve blood circulation and affect blood flow from the heart. Hawthorn has positive inotropic effects, causes peripheral vasodilation, increases myocardial perfusion, and may have antiarrhythmic activity by increasing the refractory period.
