Overview

Hawthorn juice is a beverage made from the berries (and sometimes leaves or flowers) of the hawthorn plant, most commonly species in the genus Crataegus. It is consumed as a food and traditional remedy, particularly in East Asia and Europe. Hawthorn contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, phenolic acids, and triterpenoids that are believed to have antioxidant properties. Traditionally, hawthorn preparations—including juices—have been used for cardiovascular health (such as heart failure, chest pain/angina, high blood pressure), digestive issues (indigestion), lipid metabolism regulation (cholesterol lowering), blood sugar management in diabetes models, anti-inflammatory effects, and mild sedative/anxiolytic uses[1][2][4][5]. However, robust clinical evidence supporting these uses is limited; most studies are animal-based or use extracts rather than juice specifically[2][3][4]. Hawthorn may interact with cardiovascular medications and can cause side effects such as dizziness or gastrointestinal upset[1][6]. The safety of hawthorn products during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been established[8].
