Hawthorn total flavonoids refers to the mixture of major flavonoids isolated and purified from hawthorn leaves, primarily from species such as Crataegus pinnatifida and related Crataegus species. The main active constituents include flavones, flavonols, dihydroflavones, dihydroflavonols, and flavanes, with specific compounds such as vitexin, hyperoside, rutin, chlorogenic acid, quercetin, isoquercitrin, and procyanidin B2 among others. Preclinical and clinical studies suggest a variety of pharmacological effects including strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and cardioprotective actions. Mechanistically, hawthorn flavonoids exert effects via free radical scavenging, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, promotion of autophagy, suppression of apoptosis, and modulation of signaling pathways such as PI3K/GSK3β/cyclin D1 in cardiovascular models. Hawthorn total flavonoids are widely available as dietary supplements and are a focus of research both as natural therapies and as adjuncts in metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders[3][4][6][7][2][1][8].
