Overview

Hazel pollen extract is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the hazel tree, *Corylus avellana*. It is used as an active ingredient in allergen immunotherapy to treat individuals with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and/or allergic asthma triggered by hazel pollen. [4] The therapeutic principle involves administering controlled, gradually increasing doses of the pollen allergens to desensitize the patient's immune system. This process aims to induce immune tolerance, thereby reducing or eliminating the allergic symptoms that occur upon natural exposure to the pollen. Due to significant cross-reactivity between allergens of trees in the birch homologous group, hazel pollen extract is often included in mixed-tree pollen preparations alongside extracts from birch (*Betula*) and alder (*Alnus*) for sublingual (SLIT) or subcutaneous (SCIT) immunotherapy. [4, 11] These products are designed to provide broader protection throughout the tree pollen season. [11] While some products, like ALK's ITULATEK, are based on birch pollen extract, they are also indicated for patients sensitized to hazel due to this cross-reactivity. [12, 14]
