HBI-002 is an investigational oral low-dose carbon monoxide (CO) drug product being developed by Hillhurst Biopharmaceuticals for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and sickle cell disease. It utilizes the proprietary GLASS (Gas in Liquid Advanced Stability System) platform technology to deliver therapeutic gases in an oral liquid formulation, a delivery method that was previously limited to inhalation. HBI-002 acts as a modulator of the heme oxygenase 1 (HMOX1) pathway, a protective cellular metabolic pathway known to regulate inflammatory processes and cell death mechanisms. In Parkinson's disease, the drug is designed to provide neuroprotective benefits by preserving dopaminergic neurons, with the goal of slowing or stopping disease progression. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 2a clinical trials for safety, pharmacokinetics, and biomarker effects.
