Overview

HBI-137 is an experimental small molecule therapeutic being developed by Hillhurst Biopharmaceuticals for acute use in kidney transplantation. The drug utilizes the proprietary GLASS (Gas-Liquid Administered Specialty Solutions) platform, which enables the stable delivery of medical gases, specifically carbon monoxide (CO), in a liquid formulation. HBI-137 is designed to be administered via instillation to provide organ protection by leveraging the cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties of low-dose carbon monoxide. This mechanism mimics the endogenous protective effects of the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway, aiming to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury and inflammation associated with the transplant process. As of current reports, HBI-137 is in the preclinical stage of development.
