Overview

HBOC-205LL.LT.MW600 is a **third-generation hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC)**, a type of blood substitute derived from **polymerized bovine hemoglobin** with a high molecular weight. It is engineered to provide oxygen-carrying capacity in situations where blood transfusion may not be possible or is contraindicated. Compared to earlier HBOC products such as HBOC-201, HBOC-205LL.LT.MW600 features a higher degree of polymerization (higher molecular weight), which is associated with reduced percentages of free dimers and tetramers, and results in lower vasoactivity (reduced risk of vasoconstrictive side effects) in vascular tissues. The principle mechanism is to act as an **oxygen transport protein** in the bloodstream, delivering oxygen to tissues. Like other HBOCs, it has been studied for use as a transfusion alternative, particularly in hemorrhagic shock or severe anemia, but vasoactive side effects (such as pulmonary hypertension) have limited broad clinical use.
