Overview

HBV most commonly refers to the hepatitis B virus, a DNA virus that infects the liver and can cause both acute and chronic liver disease. It is not itself a drug but rather the pathogen targeted by several antiviral drugs and vaccines. In some contexts, "HBV" may be used as shorthand for "hepatitis B vaccine," which is used to prevent infection with hepatitis B virus. The main mechanism of action for hepatitis B vaccines is to stimulate an immune response against the surface antigen of HBV, thereby conferring immunity. Approved vaccines include recombinant protein-based formulations such as Engerix-B, Heplisav-B, and Recombivax HB[8]. These are indicated for prevention of hepatitis B infection in adults and children.
