HBV-EPV is an experimental, orally administered recombinant protein vaccine developed for the prevention of hepatitis B. It consists of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) protein expressed within transgenic potato tubers. This "edible vaccine" approach leverages the plant's cell walls to provide bio-encapsulation, protecting the antigenic protein from degradation in the acidic environment of the stomach and ensuring its delivery to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). The vaccine was primarily designed to serve as a cost-effective, needle-free booster for individuals who have already received a primary vaccination series with traditional injectable HBV vaccines. Although clinical studies reached Phase 1, the specific trial for HBV-EPV was withdrawn, and development of this potato-based platform has largely been superseded by other recombinant technologies.
