The hCMV Receptor Decoy is an engineered protein therapeutic being developed by Cyrus Biotechnology in collaboration with the University of Illinois. Designed using proprietary computational protein engineering and AI platforms, the drug acts as a soluble receptor decoy composed of engineered variants of the Platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRα). PDGFRα is the natural host cell receptor used by Human Cytomegalovirus (hCMV) to enter fibroblasts and other cell types via the viral gH/gL/gO trimeric complex. By mimicking this receptor with high affinity, the therapeutic binds to the virus and blocks its ability to interact with actual cell-surface receptors, thereby neutralizing the infection. The primary clinical focus is the prevention and treatment of congenital hCMV infections, which are a leading cause of birth defects and permanent hearing loss in infants.
