The HD-MAP COVID-19 vaccine is a needle-free, protein subunit vaccine candidate delivered via Vaxxas's proprietary High-Density Microarray Patch (HD-MAP) technology. The vaccine utilizes a stabilized form of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, specifically the HexaPro antigen developed by the University of Texas at Austin, which is coated onto thousands of microscopic projections on a small patch. When applied to the skin for several seconds, the patch delivers the antigen directly to the dense population of immune cells in the epidermis and dermis. This delivery method is designed to enhance the immune response compared to traditional intramuscular injection, potentially allowing for significant dose-sparing and improved stability at room temperature, which simplifies global logistics and distribution.
