Overview

The HD-MAP influenza vaccine is a needle-free, intradermal vaccine delivery system developed by Vaxxas. It utilizes a High-Density Microarray Patch (HD-MAP) consisting of thousands of microscopic projections coated with a dried formulation of influenza hemagglutinin (HA) antigen. Upon application to the skin, the microprojections penetrate the outer layers to deliver the vaccine directly to the abundant immune cells in the epidermis and dermis. This delivery method has demonstrated enhanced immunogenicity and dose-sparing effects compared to traditional intramuscular injections. The vaccine is notably thermostable, maintaining stability at 40°C for up to 12 months, which facilitates distribution in regions with limited cold chain infrastructure. Clinical development, supported by BARDA, has progressed through Phase I trials for both seasonal (H1N1) and pre-pandemic avian (H7N9) influenza strains.
