HDAC2 antisense refers to experimental antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) designed to target and reduce the expression of histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) mRNA. HDAC2 is a histone deacetylase enzyme that acts as a 'memory suppressor' by regulating the expression of genes involved in synaptic plasticity and cognitive function. By base-pairing with HDAC2 mRNA, these ASOs facilitate its degradation, thereby lowering HDAC2 protein levels and potentially restoring memory function. Preclinical studies in mouse models have shown that a single central nervous system injection can lead to long-lasting reductions in HDAC2 and improvements in memory, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for Alzheimer's disease, autism, and other memory-related disorders.
