Overview

Heat-inactivated *Adlercreutzia equolifaciens* is a postbiotic (also known as a paraprobiotic) preparation consisting of non-viable cells of the Gram-positive bacterium *A. equolifaciens*. This preparation is primarily utilized in preclinical research to investigate the metabolic effects of the species, particularly its role in mediating the relationship between nicotine consumption and weight loss. While live *A. equolifaciens* has been shown to reduce obesity by degrading gut nicotine and subsequently modulating polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels and adipose tissue thermogenesis, the heat-inactivated version is often used as a control to demonstrate that these specific enzymatic activities require viable bacteria. However, as a postbiotic, it remains a subject of interest for its potential to influence the gut microbiota composition and host immune signaling through heat-stable cellular components. It is currently in the early stages of research as a potential microbial therapy for metabolic disorders.
