Heat-killed Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145 is a postbiotic (non-viable microbial cell preparation) developed by Biopolis (a subsidiary of ADM). It is derived from the live probiotic strain BPL1 through heat inactivation (typically 121 °C for 30 minutes). Clinical studies in abdominally obese individuals have demonstrated that daily oral consumption of the heat-killed form significantly improves anthropometric adiposity biomarkers, including reductions in visceral fat area, waist circumference, and body mass index, with some studies suggesting superior efficacy of the heat-killed form over the live strain. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the gut microbiome, specifically increasing the abundance of the Akkermansia genus, and improving metabolic markers such as insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR) and diastolic blood pressure. It has been evaluated both as a standalone capsule and as a functional ingredient in food matrices like seafood sticks.
