Overview

Heat-killed *Bifidobacterium dentium* is an inactivated preparation of the human-derived probiotic bacterium *B. dentium*. In the context of gastrointestinal research, it is primarily utilized as a non-metabolically active control to evaluate the specific therapeutic contributions of live bacterial metabolites. Research indicates that while live *B. dentium* can significantly enhance the intestinal mucus barrier by upregulating goblet cell markers (such as MUC2, TFF3, and KLF4) and secreting metabolites like acetate and GABA, the heat-killed version generally fails to elicit these same protective effects in germ-free or colitis mouse models. This suggests that the beneficial modulation of the mucus layer by *B. dentium* is dependent on active bacterial metabolism and the secretion of functional molecules rather than purely structural components of the cell wall.
