Overview

Heat-killed lactobacillus paracasei refers to preparations of the probiotic bacterium Lacticaseibacillus paracasei that have been inactivated by heat and are therefore non-viable. Unlike live probiotics, these are considered “postbiotics” and may retain immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities despite loss of viability. Specific heat-killed strains have been studied and shown to reduce nasal symptoms in allergic rhinitis, lower inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-6), and provide protective or modulatory effects in conditions like influenza, osteoporosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. The inactivation process typically involves heating bacteria at 90°C for 30 minutes, rendering them non-replicating but potentially bioactive through structural bacterial components[5][3][7][2]. Mechanistically, these effects are mediated through interactions with the immune system, reduction of inflammatory mediators, modulation of gut barrier function, and potentially other host–microbiome interactions[5][7]. Applications are under investigation in allergic rhinitis, osteoporosis, gut barrier dysfunction, and potentially mood or stress. Commercial development is limited to dietary supplements and functional foods; no heat-killed formulations are approved as pharmaceuticals[3][7][5].
