Overview

Heat-killed Lactobacillus sakei CVL-001 is a parabiotic (inactivated probiotic) bacterial strain originally isolated from traditional Korean fermented kimchi (accession number KCTC 13816BP). As an inactivated whole-cell biologic, it exerts immunomodulatory effects primarily through the activation of the innate immune receptor Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2 (NOD2). This interaction promotes a tolerogenic environment by inducing the expansion of CD103+ mucosal dendritic cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs). Consequently, the compound downregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α while upregulating the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Research, primarily associated with Yonsei University and Chonnam National University, has demonstrated its potential in preclinical models for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically ulcerative colitis, and as an adjunctive therapy for tuberculosis to reduce pulmonary inflammation and drug-induced hepatotoxicity.
