Overview

**Heat-treated lactobacillus johnsonii NCC 533** is a non-replicating, inactivated form of the probiotic strain L. johnsonii NCC 533 (also known as La1) produced by heat treatment. It is applied topically in cosmetic or therapeutic formulations for skin disorders, especially atopic dermatitis, and works by reducing Staphylococcus aureus colonization and stimulating the skin's innate immune system through upregulation of antimicrobial peptides such as β-defensins and cathelicidin. The mechanism involves microbial cell wall components that interact with pattern recognition receptors on host cells, enhancing endogenous antimicrobial defense independently of probiotic viability. This form is not considered a classical probiotic, as it is non-living, but exerts postbiotic effects, and is researched and developed for topical, and to some extent oral, use for prevention and adjunctive treatment of infectious and inflammatory disorders, including atopic dermatitis and potentially other conditions linked to impaired epithelial/mucosal defense.[1][3][4][5][7]
