Overview

Heberbiovac HB is a recombinant DNA vaccine produced by expressing the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the yeast *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. Developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba, it is primarily indicated for the active immunization against hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce specific neutralizing antibodies (anti-HBs) against the viral surface protein, providing long-term protection against liver failure, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma caused by HBV. Since its approval in Cuba in 1992, it has been integrated into national newborn vaccination programs and is prequalified by the WHO/PAHO, with use extending to over 30 countries. It also serves as a platform for other multi-antigen formulations, such as pentavalent vaccines.
