Heberprovac is a therapeutic peptide-based vaccine developed by the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) for the treatment of advanced and metastatic prostate cancer. The vaccine consists of a modified gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) peptide (GnRHm1) conjugated to a tetanus toxoid (TT) carrier protein, formulated with very small size proteoliposomes (VSSP) and Montanide ISA 51 VG as adjuvants. Its mechanism of action involves inducing the production of anti-GnRH antibodies, which neutralize endogenous GnRH. This neutralization prevents GnRH from stimulating the pituitary gland, thereby inhibiting the release of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, ultimately leading to androgen deprivation and the reduction of serum testosterone to castrate levels.
