Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hederacoside C (also known as hederasaponin C or kalopanaxsaponin B) is a naturally occurring bisdesmosidic triterpenoid saponin primarily isolated from the leaves of Hedera helix (English ivy) and the stem bark of Kalopanax pictus. It serves as the primary active constituent and pharmacopoeial marker used to standardize ivy leaf extracts (such as EA 575 or Prospan) widely utilized in respiratory therapeutics for their expectorant, mucolytic, and bronchodilating properties. Preclinically, hederacoside C has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory activities, including the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6) and the inhibition of MAPK/NF-kB signaling pathways. It is also being investigated for its potential therapeutic efficacy in inflammatory conditions such as colitis, mastitis, osteoarthritis, and schistosomiasis japonica.
