Heishunpian (HSP) is a specific processed form of *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata* (Fuzi), derived from the lateral root of *Aconitum carmichaelii* Debeaux. It is prepared through a complex traditional process involving brine immersion, boiling, rinsing, dyeing with a color toner made of brown sugar and rapeseed oil, and steaming until the surface produces oil, resulting in characteristic black slices. This processing is critical for reducing the concentration of highly toxic diester diterpene alkaloids, such as aconitine, mesaconitine, and hypaconitine, by hydrolyzing them into less toxic monoester or amine alkaloids. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Heishunpian is widely used for its 'warming' and 'nourishing' properties to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, heart failure, and kidney yang deficiency. Its pharmacological effects are primarily attributed to the modulation of voltage-gated sodium channels, though it requires careful dosage management due to its narrow therapeutic index and potential for cardiotoxicity and neurotoxicity.
