Helianthus annuus pollen, derived from the common sunflower, is utilized in clinical allergology primarily as an allergen extract for the diagnosis and treatment of sunflower-related hypersensitivity. The pollen contains several allergenic proteins, most notably profilins (such as Hel a 2), which are responsible for cross-reactivity with other plant pollens and foods. In diagnostic applications, the extract is used in skin prick testing to identify individuals sensitized to sunflower pollen, which is a significant cause of occupational allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma among workers in sunflower processing industries. Therapeutically, it may be employed in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) to induce immunological tolerance by modulating T-cell and B-cell responses to the pollen's constituent allergens.
